  4.     Sons of famous men often stumble when they try to follow in
  5. their father's footsteps. That fate has befallen Frederick
  6. Wang, 38, son of Wang Laboratories founder An Wang. The younger
  7. Wang, who took over as president of the troubled company nearly
  8. three years ago, gave up the job last week. He was apparently
  9. pushed out by his father, who retains the chairmanship and who
  10. told a reporter that he graded his son at "75%." A new president
  11. will be recruited from outside.

  13.     Frederick Wang's departure came a week after the firm
  14. reported a $424 million loss for the fiscal year ending in June.
  15. Wang Lab's woes stem from its failure to shift from
  16. minicomputers to industry-standard personal computers.

  18.     Even before last month, when the senior Wang underwent
  19. surgery for cancer of the esophagus, Wall Street suspected that
  20. the family-controlled company might be put up for sale. Now that
  21. Wang's heir apparent has stepped aside, that prospect seems even
  22. more likely.
